New Delhi: At least 95 were killed after an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 hit southern Tibet, near the Nepalese border on Tuesday morning, news agency AFP reports quoting China’s state media Xinhua. Tremors were felt in several parts of India including Bihar, Assam and West Bengal.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake, occurred at 6.35 am (IST) was followed by at least seven aftershocks of magnitude about five. It had its epicentre in China’s Tibet region, about 93 km northeast of Nepal’s Lobuche.
China recorded the earthquake at 6.8 magnitude, according to an AP report.

In Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, people ran out of their homes as they were woken up by the tremors of the earthquake.
The tremors of the earthquake felt particularly felt in Bihar where people were seen rushed out of their homes and apartments to open areas. No reports of casualties or damage has been received so far, officials in India reported.
Nepal is considered as a seismically active region where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. Hence, the region is susceptible to earthquakes. Due to tectonic activity in the Himalayas, the country experiences earthquakes more often.
“The January 7, 2025, M7.1 earthquake near Xizang, China, occurred as the result of normal faulting at shallow depth north of the boundary between the Eurasia and Indian plates,” Indian Express reports as US Geological Survey said in its tectonic summary of the earthquake.
“Focal mechanism solutions indicate that rupture occurred on a roughly north-south striking fault, dipping moderately to either to the east or to the west.” Survey further added.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), two more earthquakes struck the region later in the morning.
In April 2015, a massive earthquake of magnitude 7.8 had struck Nepal where nearly 10,000 people died, and more than 22,000 injured.
