Kabul, Afghanistan: More than 600 people have been killed and 1,500 injured after a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Afghanistan on Monday. Tremors were felt just before midnight local time in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan. Rescue operations are progressing, but the mountainous terrain and poor communication are posing a hindrance.

The earthquake struck about 27km (17 miles) east of Jalalabad city in Nangarhar province at a depth of 8km (5 miles), according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). A short while later, it was followed by at least three aftershocks.

According to Sharafat Zaman, a spokesman for the Health Ministry, rescue operations were under way, and several villages were destroyed.

At least 622 people killed in the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, the Reuters reported, as the Taliban-run Afghan interior ministry is saying.

In a poste on X, the United Nations in Afghanistan wrote, “The UN in Afghanistan is deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that struck the eastern region & claimed hundreds of lives, injuring many more. Our teams are on the ground, delivering emergency assistance & lifesaving support. Our thoughts are with the affected communities.”

Express our support and solidarity to the Afghan people as they respond to it. India will extend assistance in this hour of need. Our condolences to the families of the victims. And our prayers for early recovery of the injured.”

Afghanistan is prone to frequent and devastating earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountains, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge. In October 2023, an earthquake struck western Afghanistan, killing more than 2,000 people.
