Myanmar: The death toll from the recent earthquake that hit Myanmar has increased to more than 1,700, injuring nearly 3000. Similarly, in Bangkok, the number of deaths rose to 17, according to city authorities.

Massive earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 6.4 on the Richter scale hit Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand on Friday (March 28). The earthquake hit northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, at 12:50 pm (0650 GMT) at a shallow depth of 10 km.

India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has started rescue operations under ‘Operation Brahma’. The relief team will visit hospital today and will set up set up their medical services tomorrow.

“We are also trying to get the NDRF team deployed at the Sky Villa (where 4 towers of 11 storey each have collapsed). The towers have several foreigners,” the official statement read.

India has sent relief materials, medicines, an 80-member search and rescue team from the NDRF and military field hospitals to Myanmar in three C-130J and two C-17 Globemaster aircraft.

The UK Government announced £10 million support package for the people of Myanmar and the United Nations has announced a $5 million relief package as well.

Meanwhile, China sent food, blankets for the affected people and team of rescuers with drones and other equipment.

Funerals of several victims are expected to take place on Monday.

Also, as Eid ul-Fitr – holiday that follows the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan – falls on Monday, Muslim worshippers gathered near a destroyed mosque in the city for the morning prayers.
