4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Delhi And Adjoining Areas

New Delhi: Strong tremors felt in the several parts of the national capital and adjoining regions on early Monday (February 17) morning. Residents of New Delhi woke up to an earthquake of 4.0 magnitude, first hitting Delhi-NCR at around 5.30 am.

The epicentre was located near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in south Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan, officials reported. The earthquake struck at a depth of five kilometres and its shallow depth indicated that the tremors were registered widely.

The strong tremors triggered people in the residential areas and high-rise buildings to quickly rush out as a safety measure. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi requested  residents to stay calm and follow safety measures while keeping alert for possible aftershocks.

In a post on X, he wrote, “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation.”

Delhi is located nearly 250 kilometres from the seismically-active Himalayan collision zone and experiences quivering frequently from both Himalayan and local sources.

Delhi-NCR is located in Seismic Zone IV in the seismic zoning map of India. It meant that the national capital and its adjoining areas are prone to moderate to high earthquakes.

In a post on X, The Delhi Police wrote, “We hope you all are safe, Delhi!” It also requested citizens to dial 112 for any emergency help.

Meanwhile, an earthquake measuring 4.0 magnitude hit Bihar’s Siwan on Monday morning at a depth of 10 km, National Center for Seismology (NCS) reports.
