
Powerful Earthquake Jolts Afghanistan; Tremors Felt In Delhi
Hindu Kush, Afghanistan: An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 on the Richter scale has hit Afghanistan in the wee hours of April 16. The tremors of the earthquake were felt in India too, especially in the capital city, New Delhi.
The National Center for Seismology has stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was identified in the Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region. The quake was reported at around 4:43 am, and no reports of damage were located in Afghanistan or in the neighbouring countries so far. “EQ of M: 5.9, On: 16/04/2025 04:43:58 IST, Lat: 35.83 N, Long: 70.60 E, Depth: 75 Km, Location: Hindu Kush, Afghanistan,” the agency for monitoring earthquakes stated.

Though there are no reports of casualties, authorities are concerned over the potential impact of any natural catastrophe on the already devastated people due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. The country is one of the most disaster-prone regions in South Asia, and the UN agency has warned that Afghanistan is highly exposed to natural disasters such as earthquakes.

Notably, in the morning, another powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.2 hit the Southeast Indian Ridge, the mid-ocean ridge located in the southern Indian Ocean, stretching along a divergent plate boundary between the Rodrigues triple junction and the Australian-Antarctic Discordance.
