Who Is Dr Medusa? Lucknow Professor Booked For 'Sedition' After Pahalgam Attack

Dr Madri Kakoti aka Dr Medusa.

Uttar Pradesh: University of Lucknow assistant professor Dr Madri Kakoti, widely known online as Dr Medusa, has been booked over her social media posts demanding accountability from the government in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack.

An FIR was registered at Hasanganj police station following a complaint by Jatin Shukla, a postgraduate student and member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Shukla alleged that Dr Kakoti’s posts were detrimental to national integrity and law and order.

In her recent satirical commentary, Dr Kakoti criticised the media and government for what she described as a lack of serious discourse following the attack. “The media was busy chasing TRPs, and no serious questions were asked of those in power. A major lapse in internal security went unnoticed, and the home minister remained clueless,” she said in a video.

Speaking to Newslaundry, Shukla said, “People from a leftist ideology are trying to divide society and politicise a national crisis. We filed this FIR so that no student or professor repeats such behaviour.”

The FIR has been filed under BNS sections 197(1), 152, 302, 352, 353(2) and 196(1)(a) apart from provisions of the IT Act.

BNS section 197(1) deals with claims , 302 with words hurting religious sentiments, 353(2) with statements creating ill will, and 196(1)(a) with promoting enmity. While it doesn’t use the term “sedition,” section 152 criminalises acts that incite secession, rebellion, or subversive activities, or encourage feelings of separatism, potentially endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.

Dr Kakoti, who hails from Assam, is known for her satire and political commentary under the alias Dr Medusa. She frequently uses social media to critique government actions.

The University of Lucknow is yet to issue any official statement on the FIR against the assistant professor.

The Pakistani social media account cited in Shukla’s complaint is the same one that previously shared remarks made by Bhojpuri singer Neha Singh Rathore.

Rathore was booked on Sunday under 11 sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 352 (assault or use of criminal force), after the account reposted her video criticising the Narendra Modi government over the Pahalgam terror attack. In the video, Rathore claimed that the Prime Minister would now campaign in Bihar using the attack as a rallying point.

Posted on April 25, the video features Rathore taking a swipe at the BJP’s “war rukwa di papa” (Papa stopped the war) ad campaign, saying that the Prime Minister failed to prevent a terror attack within his own country. She also questioned why people don’t want to ask questions to the people in power.
