India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit to be held in Tianjin, China, from Aug 31 to Sept 1, 2025. This will mark his first visit to China since 2019. The announcement amid the imposition of 50% tariffs by the Trump administration has been a significant move by India to assert its national interest and autonomy in India’s foreign relations.

Amid the ongoing tariff issue with the US, the upcoming visit is expected to recalibrate India’s ties with China and balance its relationship with the US. Meanwhile, China has supported India to retain its strategic autonomy while maintaining relations with other countries. No other country should interfere in the internal matters and can not decide the foreign policy matters of India, China’s spokesperson to India, Yu Xing, said.

Not only India, but the US administration had imposed a 30 percent tariff on China for purchasing Russian oil.

India’s participation is also significant in the backdrop of Chinese support for Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor.

Notably, India’s relations with the US seem to have taken a sour turn after the Trump administration passed an executive order imposing 50 percent tariffs on imported goods from India. The US alleged that India is purchasing Russian Oil amid the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war and fueling it.

Even, US President also announced to put secondary sanctions on India for buying Russian Oil and selling to the world market.

In response to the high tariffs on India, the MEA in its official statement alleged US to encouraging the buying of Russian Oil and has double standards for involving in trading with Russia itself. Making its stand clear, India asserted to work for the interest of its people and retain foreign policy autonomy amid the mounting US economic pressure.
