'PM Modi Doesn't Sleep, He's Like Me': US Envoy Recalls Trump's Remark About Calling Indian PM At 6 AM

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has shared an anecdote highlighting the close rapport between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recalling how Trump wanted to call the Indian leader even though it was 6 am in India.

Speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit, Gor said the incident took place backstage at UFC 327 in Miami earlier this year. According to him, Trump suddenly suggested calling Prime Minister Modi.

Gor said he reminded the US President that it was only 6 am in India. Trump reportedly responded by saying that Modi would already be awake, adding, “He doesn’t sleep, he’s like me.”

Since Trump had to appear at the event shortly afterwards, the conversation with the Prime Minister was postponed and held the following day.

Sharing the story, Gor said it reflected the personal friendship between the two leaders. He noted that close friends do not always need formal scheduling to speak and suggested that Trump’s relationship with Modi is different from the one he shares with many other world leaders.

The ambassador also said Trump holds India in high regard and continues to have warm memories of his previous visit to the country. He expressed hope that Trump would visit India again in the future.

Gor also spoke about the ongoing India-US trade negotiations, saying the agreement is in its final stage with only a small portion of discussions left before it is concluded. He compared the pace of the talks with the European trade deal, which took nearly two decades to complete.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit the United States later this year for the G20 Summit. The two leaders last met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, where they held bilateral talks and once again displayed their friendly equation.
