Generic Degrees Like BA, BCom, BSc Have Weak Job Link; Most Graduates Work Outside Their Field: NITI Aayog
New Delhi: National Institution for Transforming India, known as NITI Aayog recently revealed that over-reliance on generic degrees such as BA, B.Sc, and B.Com has contributed to the unemployment among graduates in India.
The policy think tank of the Government of India pointed out that such generic degrees holders have the weakest job link as most of the graduates end up outside their field for work. ‘Over 90% of graduates in India are employed in roles not aligned with their qualifications,’ the organisation said.
The think Tank also flagged that unemployment among graduates remains much higher than the national average. NITI Aayog further noted that moving towards specialised, job-linked programmes in high-growth sectors such as green industries, electric vehicles, and greater focus on apprenticeships is more directly linked to jobs.
