Gujarat Lags Behind Jharkhand And Rajasthan In Quality Education

As per the NITI Aayog’s finding, in the Sustainable Development Report 2024, Gujarat is lagging behind many states such as Haryana, Sikkim, Manipur, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. SDG India Index is the country’s principal tool to measure national and subnational progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) released by NITI Aayog.

Kerala tops the SDG Index with an overall score of 82, followed by Haryana and Himachal Pradesh with scores of 77 each. However, the Gujarat score is only 58 which is even lower than the West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan.

The net enrollment rate for classes I-VIII is 89% despite the state government has been running several school enrollment programs for over a decade now including ‘Shala Praveshotsav’. Under the given program, senior administrative officers such as IAS, IPS, and IFS officers visit villages to ensure increased enrollment every year.

In comparison, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam have achieved a school enrolment rate of 100% while Andhra Pradesh has reached a 96.9% enrolment rate.

The net enrolment ratio remained less than par with the other states, however, the school dropout rate in secondary education remains high. However, the dropout rate is lesser in comparison to the 1980s and 1990s. Still, the report indicates that Gujarat’s school dropout rate stands at 17.9% which is far higher than Kerala’s rate of 5.5%

SDG India Index Findings – Quality Education

  • Adjusted Net Enrolment Rate (ANER) for elementary education is 96.5% for 2021-22, up from 87.26% in 2018-19, with 14 States and UTs achieving 100%.
  • Pupil Teacher Ratio is 18 for 2021-22, thus achieving the target of 30.
  • 88.65% of schools have access to both electricity and drinking water.
  • 100% parity between females and males in Higher Education (18-23 years)
