Congress Leader Shanimol Usman Becomes Deputy Speaker Of Kerala Assembly
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Securing a decisive victory, defeating LDF candidate Muhammad Muhsin in the election by a margin 99 against 34, Congress leader and Aroor MLA Shanimol Usman was officially elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly today, June 2.
The three BJP MLAs abstained from the voting, as it did not field any candidate for the race. Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan also did not cast his vote, as per the norm.

Shanimol Osman becomes the fourth woman to be elected as the Deputy Speaker in the Kerala assembly. K O Aysha Bai was the first Deputy speaker in 1957 till 1959, while A Nafeesath Beevi served as the second woman deputy speaker from 1960 to 1964. Bhargavi Thankappan held the position in 1987.
The election to choose speaker took place during the first session of the 16th Kerala Legislative Assembly. Senior Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan was elected Speaker with 101 votes on May 22
