Charanjit Singh Channi Wins From Jalandhar

Congress’ Charanjit Singh Channi has won the Lok Sabha elections from Jalandhar. Charanjit Singh Channi, former Punjab chief minister, defeated BJP’s Sushil Kumar Rinku with a margin of 1,75,993 votes. Pawan Kumar Tinu of Aam Aadmi Party came in the third place.

The constituency, reserved for the Scheduled Castes (SC) category, carries the entire Jalandhar district and includes nine assembly seats: Phillaur (SC), Nakodar, Shahkot, Kartarpur (SC), Jalandhar West (SC), Jalandhar Central, Jalandhar North, Jalandhar Cantt, Adampur (SC), and Chabbewal (SC). The literacy rate in the constituency stands at 73.97%.

In the 2019 General Election, Congress candidate Santokh Singh Chaudhary emerged victorious with a margin of 19,491 votes, securing 385,712 votes against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Charanjit Singh Atwal, who garnered 366,221 votes. The voter turnout was a notable 63.05%

Charanjit Singh Channi is a seasoned politician who served as the 16th Chief Minister of Punjab, whose political career began as a municipal councillor in Kharar, and he has also held the position of Minister of Technical Education and Training in the Second Amarinder Singh ministry. Additionally, he served as the leader of the opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly.

Sushil Kumar Rinku was born on June 5, 1975, Rinku is a former member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and has served as a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly from Jalandhar West. He recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after winning a by-election as an AAP candidate on May 13. Rinku’s switch to the BJP was marked by a formal induction on March 27, 2024.

Pawan Kumar Tinu was previously a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly representing Adampur for the Shiromani Akali Dal, Tinu switched to the Aam Aadmi Party in April 2024. His candidacy for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat was announced shortly after his move to AAP. Mohinder Singh KP (SAD): Adding further intensity to the election, the SAD has fielded Mohinder Singh KP, highlighting a contest that involves significant legendary ties and political rivalry.
