Congress’ Ex-Union Minister Kumari Selja To Take On Party Hopper Ashok Tanwar In Sirsa

Written by Fazal Rahman Chembulangad

Former Union Minister Kumari Selja is the Congress candidate from Sirsa. A former MP and Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment and Tourism in the Government of India during Manmohan Singh’s government, Kumari Selja is a prominent Congress figure in Haryana. Notably, the former MP is set to face for Congress leader and BJP candidate Ashok Tanwar.

Started political life by becoming the president of the Mahila Congress in 1990, Kumari Selja was first elected to the parliament from Sirsa Lok Sabha constituency in 1991, and retained the seat in 1996. During the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, she was elected from Ambala and became the Minister.

During the 2019 general election, the Congress leader was defeated by the BJP candidate in Ambala. She has also served as Haryana’s party chief and has been a Rajya Sabha MP from 2014 to 2020.

Launching her election campaign, the Congress candidate last month raised issues such as high inflation, unemployment, hate, corruption and the challenges towards the constitution and democracy. The 61-year-old Congress candidate alleged that the Prime Minister Modi-led government has created unrest in the society by dividing people based on caste and religion.

The former Minister further said that the constitution of India protects the rights of farmers, labourers, weaker sections, shopkeepers, employees and other sections of the society, but the Prime Minister is hatching a conspiracy to change it to exploit the people.

A reserved constituency, Sirsa has 29.2 percentage SC voters. BJP’s Sunita Duggal, a former IAS officer who joined the party in 2014, has been representing the constituency since 2019. Notably, denying the ticket to the sitting MP, the BJP has nominated Ashok Tanwar, the former Congress and AAP leader who joined the saffron party in January this year.

Amid the political gimmicks and rellellions, the constituency is all set to witness an interesting battle between the Congress’ Kumari Selja and the party turncoat and BJP’s candidate Ashok Tanwar.
