Congress's Surya Kanta Sarkar To Get A Stronghold Of Silchar

Surya Kanta Sarkar is representing Congress in the Silchar constituency on the party ticket in the Lok Sabha election 2024. Surya Kanta Sarkar, a long-time worker of the party is fielded against the BJP candidate and the incumbent minister Parimal Suklabaidya.

His political history has a dedicated service to the party in the Silchar constituency. Being a long-time member of the Silchar Congress, he has been handpicked by the party leadership to challenge the Prominent BJP leader.

This election marks his challenge against Parimal Suklabaidya, an incumbent minister and the five-time MLA of the Dholai constituency. This constituency was previously represented by Sushmita Dec in the 2019 election, where she was defeated by Rajdeep Roy of the BJP as she secured 43.99% votes, whereas the BJP secured 52.5% of the total votes.

Silchar Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam state in north-eastern India. From 1951 to 1971, the area under it was referred to as the Cachar constituency. Silchar Lok Sabha constituency encompasses the entirety of Cachar district, comprising both urban and rural populations. The constituency’s demographic fabric is characterized by its diverse ethnic and religious composition. Scheduled Caste (SC) voters constitute approximately 14.4% of the electorate, while Scheduled Tribe (ST) voters comprise around 1%. Muslim voters form a significant portion, accounting for 38.3% of the electorate, according to recent voter list analysis.

Silchar constituency of Assam has always been a battleground of the major parties BJP and Congress all these years, as it witnessed a democratic shift between both parties since 1991. The 2024 Lok Sabha election had again declared a political battle between BJP and Congress with its candidate Pramil Suklabadiya and Surya Kanta Sarkar respectively.
