An Australian hockey player has been arrested in Paris for allegedly trying to buy cocaine in the French capital on Tuesday night.
Although an initial report from Europe1’s Jean-Baptiste Marty did not confirm the name of the hockey player; it was later identified to be Tom Craig. He was taken into custody from the 9th arrondissement of Paris.
The report further said that another person who was allegedly carrying 75 ecstasy tablets, 3g of 2 MMC, and seven vials of cocaine was also arrested from the same location.
The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) confirmed the reports in an official statement.
“The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has confirmed an Australian hockey team member is in custody after being arrested in Paris on August 6th,” a spokesperson said.
“No charges have been laid. The AOC is continuing to make enquiries and arrange support for the team member.”
Incidentally, the Australian team was eliminated from Paris 2024 after their loss in the quarter-finals. The Australian players had attended a team function in Paris on Tuesday night, which wrapped up at around 08:45 pm.
Craig, the veteran midfielder, has been a part of the Australian hockey team since 2014. He has represented the national team in 101 appearances and scored 29 goals. He was a part of the Australian squad that clinched the silver medal at Tokyo 2020 and Commonwealth Games gold in 2018.
The 28-year-old had made his debut for Australia in a test series against India in 2014. He later competed in the Champions Trophy in Bhubaneswar.
