Manchester City has secured the long-term future of star striker Erling Haaland, who has signed a new 10-year contract with the club, extending his stay until the summer of 2034. Haaland, 24, joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 and has since established himself as one of the world’s finest strikers.
His debut season was nothing short of phenomenal, as he spearheaded City’s historic Treble-winning campaign, which included the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.
Scoring an unprecedented 52 goals across all competitions in his first season, Haaland shattered records, including the Premier League single-season goal tally with 36 strikes. His performances earned him a host of individual accolades, such as the PFA Player of the Year, Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year, and the Premier League Golden Boot.
The Norwegian international continued his dominance in the 2023/24 season, despite missing two months due to injury. He still managed 38 goals in 45 appearances, securing a second consecutive Golden Boot and helping City clinch their fourth straight Premier League title.
As of the 2024/25 campaign, Haaland has already netted 21 goals in 28 appearances across all competitions. His tally of 111 goals in just over two-and-a-half years highlights his extraordinary consistency and prowess. Reflecting on his new deal, Haaland expressed his gratitude and excitement for the future:
“Manchester City is a special club with fantastic people and amazing supporters. I am thrilled to commit my future here and look forward to continuing our journey of success. Pep, the coaching staff, and my teammates have been instrumental in my growth, and I am determined to keep improving and helping the team achieve more milestones.”
City manager Pep Guardiola hailed the new contract as “exceptional news” for the club. Speaking ahead of their match against Ipswich, Guardiola said:
“When a player signs a long-term deal like this, it shows their trust in the club and their love for the environment we’ve created. Erling is not only a phenomenal player but also a consummate professional who is always striving to improve. His commitment motivates the entire team.”
Guardiola emphasised Haaland’s unique ability to influence games, noting, “He’s making me a better manager and the team stronger. Our job is to keep creating opportunities for him to shine because, in those moments, he’s unstoppable.”
Haaland is currently placed 15th place on the club’s all-time scorers’ list.
The striker’s record-breaking achievements include becoming the fastest player to reach 50 Premier League goals and the youngest to hit 40 career goals in the UEFA Champions League. His influence has also extended to individual honours, including the prestigious Gerd Müller Trophy and BBC Sports Personality World Sport Star of the Year in 2023.
City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, highlighted Haaland’s potential for growth: “Erling’s numbers and achievements speak for themselves, but his humility, dedication, and hunger to improve are what set him apart. Working under Pep and his coaching staff, he will continue to evolve and solidify his place among football’s greats.”
