Lionel Messi’s second half free kick gave Argentina a 1-0 win over Ecuador on Thursday in the 2026 World Cup qualifier match.

Argentina successfully broke the Ecuador defence in the 78th minute of the game, the Inter Miami player send the defending World Cup champions through to victory in Buenos Aires. The World Champions will start off the campaign with all three points.

Ecuador gave a tough time throughout the game, but Messi stepped up to the ball with 12 minutes remaining.

Captain Messi continues the fine form which he has showcased in the Inter Miami club by scoring the free-kick.

Ecuador was in 5-3-2 formation. Argentina had 71% of the possession in the game, but the continuous attacks were stifled by Ecuador. It was Messi’s 29th goal in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying matches equalizing with Uruguay player Luis Suarez.

Argentina”s next match is in Bolivia on September 13th. All time rival Brazil will face Bolivia tomorrow in their home ground.
