Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chess Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa and his parents at his residence on Thursday.
Praggnanandhaa’s post on X handle read, “It was a great honour to meet Hon”ble Prime Minister @narendramodi at his residence! Thank you sir for all the words of encouragement to me and my parents.”
The Prime Minister also posted on the meeting, saying that he “had very special visitors at 7, LKM today. Delighted to meet you, @rpragchess along with your family. You personify passion and perseverance. Your example shows how India”s youth can conquer any domain. Proud of you!”

On August 4, Praggnanandhaa had to give way to Magnus Carlsen, at the International Chess Federation World Cup in Baku but he had put up a very impressive game, with commendable determination, winning the silver. His performance against World No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura and World No. 3 Fabiano Caruana, was outstanding.
Though he was not able to beat Carlsen, Praggnanandhaa has qualified for the upcoming FIDE Candidates tournament. The eight-player chess event is to take place from April 2 to April 25, 2024, in Toronto, Canada. The victorious in this would have the opportunity to appear for the most coveted title of World Chess Championship, said the HT.
Earlier, Anand Mahindra of Mahindra group had decided to gift Praggnanandhaa an electric SUV in appreciation of his accomplishments in his journey with chess. He had taken to X.com and had written, “appreciate your sentiment, Krishlay, & many, like you, have been urging me to gift a Thar to @rpragchess But I have another idea … I would like to encourage parents to introduce their children to Chess & support them as they pursue this cerebral game (despite the surge in popularity of video games!). It”s an investment in a better future for our planet, just like EVs.
