Iranian Drone Allegedly Strikes Airport In Azerbaijan's Autonomous Nakhchivan Exclave

Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan: An Iranian drone has allegedly targeted Azerbaijan’s autonomous Nakhchivan exclave on Thursday, February 5 amid the ongoing US-Israeli aggression in Iran.

While one drone attack on Azerbaijan’s enclave, which is allegedly increasingly linked to US interests through regional transit developments, hit the terminal building of the airport in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, another fell in an open area in the village of Shakarabad, according to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministry condemned the drone attacks, adding that it injured two civilians and caused material damage at the airport, while seeking clean explanation from the Islamic Republic. Iran has been carrying out retaliatory attacks against the US bases in the region.

The region is part of a historic US-brokered peace deal signed last year between former deadly foes Armenia and Azerbaijan. The US-led land corridor, dubbed the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) gave the US development rights for the proposed route connecting Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave.

Notably, Iran has long opposed the proposed route given that the development would cut the country off from Armenia and the rest of the Caucasus while bringing potentially hostile foreign forces close to its borders.

Apart from that Iran has been accusing the Azeri government in Azerbaijan of turning the country into a Israeli spy base. The latest attack has opened yet another front amid the ongoing conflict in the region.
