UAE Experiences Hottest May In Over Two Decades

The UAE recorded 51.6 degrees Celsius in the month of May, making it the hottest month the country had experienced in more than twenty years.

The weather monitoring data had shown that the temperature had reached 51 degrees Celsius in the Sweihan region near Al Ain in Abu Dhabi on May 24. This had been the highest temperature recorded since the weather tracking began in 2003. The previous record was set to be 50.2 degrees Celsius recorded in Al Shawamekh during 2009, reported Gulf News.

In May, the average maximum temperature recorded was 40.4 degrees Celsius, and it exceeded the long-term average of 39.2 degrees Celsius from 2003 to 2024.

The recent weather forecast had come to the conclusion that the temperature in the nation had risen by over 1.5 degrees Celsius. As the summer solstice on June 21 marks the start of summer, the temperatures are expected to range from 47 degrees Celsius to 49 degrees Celsius and occasionally hit 50 degrees Celsius.

The rise in temperature was attributed to various atmospheric conditions, including low-pressure systems originating from the UAE’s southern regions, according to meteorological experts. And it is expected that the higher temperature will persist in the coming days, with a further increase.

The temperature rise, meanwhile, corresponds to the global trend. As per Reuters reports, May 2025 had been the second-warmest May recorded, following last year’s May.

According to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), last month was the Earth’s second-warmest May, contributing to the second-hottest March–May spring season overall for the northern hemisphere.
