US Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris called to end the war in Gaza, while pledging to defend Israel, during her speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC). In the final night of the four-day long convention, she said “now is the time to get a hostage deal and a ceasefire deal done”. Harris shed lights on her plans for the White House.

While officially accepting the Presidential nomination, Harris said she will always ensure Israel’s ability to defend itself.

“Now is the time to get a hostage deal and a ceasefire deal done. And let me be clear, I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself and I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself”, said Harris.

“What has happened in Gaza over the past 10 months is devastating. So many innocent lives lost, desperate hungry people fleeing for safety over and over again. The scale of suffering is heartbreaking”, she added.

Harris said she and President Joe Biden are working to end the war so that Israel is secure, and hostages are released. She also said that the “suffering in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can realise their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination”.

Harris has been at the end of backlashes for the Democrats denying Palestinian-Americans’ voice be heard at the convention, while parents of an Israeli-American hostage was allowed to speak at the main stage.

Pro-Palestine supporters said Harris’ pledge to continue arming Israel rubbed further salt in the wound, said Al Jazeera.

Biden administration’s Gaza policy remained the elephant in the room. Despite being one of the most divisive among the Democrats, the issue got little attention during the convention.

This could likely hurt the Democrats at the polls, said Reuters report. The Uncommitted movement has been protesting during the convention. It had mobilised nearly 750,000 voters to withhold support for Biden during the presidential primaries, entered the venue linking arms and took their seats. Members spent Wednesday night on the sidewalk outside the convention to protest the DNC’s rejection of their request for a Palestinian speaker.
