Launch Of New Party, DOGE Review: Trump-Musk Rift Widens Over 'Big Beautiful Bill

SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who had stepped away from active politics, now appears to be making a decisive return, announcing plans to launch a new political party, dubbed the “America Party.” The tech billionaire had stepped in, criticising the US President Donald Trump for the tax cuts and spending bill.

Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” which proposes tax breaks and sweeping cuts to healthcare and food programmes, has been met with criticism from the Democratic Party as well as from some members of Trump’s Republican Party.

Earlier in June, Elon Musk, a major campaign donor to Donald Trump, criticised the proposed bill as a “disgusting abomination.” Although tensions appeared to ease after Trump told reporters he wished Musk well, the SpaceX founder reignited his criticism on Monday as US Senators convened to vote on amendments to the bill. Musk sharply criticised lawmakers who had campaigned on cutting government spending but supported the legislation, saying they “should hang their head in shame.”

“And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk said.

Moreover, the Tesla owner has now announced the launch of a new political party, saying that the bill’s massive spending indicates “that we live in a one-party country—the PORK PIG PARTY.”

“Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people,” he wrote.

This wasn’t well received by Trump either. On Tuesday, he hit back at Musk by stating that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Musk had previously led should review the subsidies Musk’s companies have received, to save the federal government “BIG money.”

“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more rocket launches, satellites, or electric car production, and our country would save a FORTUNE,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

However, it is still unclear how much influence Musk has over the US Congress and what effects his statements will have on the bill’s passage. Even Republicans have expressed concern that Musk’s on-again, off-again feud with Trump could hurt their chances to protect their majority in the 2026 midterm congressional elections.

What is Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’?

The bill outlines sweeping tax cuts along with major increases in federal spending on infrastructure, defense, and manufacturing. While Trump and his allies have promoted it as a bold plan to boost the American economy, critics argue that it would significantly expand the national debt.
