Hema Malini, the celebrity BJP candidate and sitting MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura constituency today said she has done a lot of work for her constituency, but cannot remember them. In a video shared by News 18, the actor-turned politician was seen stating that she was confident to get re-elected again on the saffron party’s ticket. She said that people are very happy with her.

The 75-year-old Bollywood star Malini has been representing the Mathura Lok Sabha constituency since 2014. Notably, the sitting MP has been vying for her third consecutive term from her constituency as she was re-nominated by the BJP for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In her stint as an MP, she has faced several controversies.

Sharing the video, Indian Youth Congress National President Srinivas BV in a sarcastic tune wrote, “People of Mathura, you are blessed.”

During the previous term as an MP, she had a total of 50 percent attendance participating in 20 debates across different sessions in the parliament. The Mathura is one of the crucial seats from Uttar Pradesh, which constitutes 80 Lok Sabha seats for the parliament.

In 2016, Hema Malini was caught in a controversy regarding the allotment of prime land for a dance academy in Mumbai’s Oshiwara area. Documents obtained through an RTI query by activist Anil Galgali highlighted the government’s decision to allocate a 2,000-square-metre plot to Malini at a less amount, not equivalent to the market value.

In the same year, Hema Malini invited trolls and criticism over the photos she shared on her social media at a time when the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh was at the edge following the death of 22 people including two police officers in a clash. The BJP MP Hema Malini was busy tweeting pictures of her film shoot which was set to release later. She was widely trolled by the netizens for her act back then.

However, the upcoming Lok Sabha election is anticipated to witness a triangular contest between candidates of BJP, BSP and Congress. As RDL joined the NDA alliance supporting the BJP candidate recently, the party has not fielded any candidate. The Congress has fielded Mukesh Dhangar to take on the celebrity MP.

Actor Hema Malini entered politics in 1999 by campaigning for the BJP candidate and Bollywood actor Vinod Khanna. However, it was in 2004 that she officially took the saffron party’s membership. Subsequently, she served as a Rajya Sabha MP till 2009 nominated by the then-president of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. In 2010, she was made the general secretary of the BJP. During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, she was given her debut ticket to the Lok Sabha. She swept the poll defeating the sitting RLD chief and MP Jayant Chaudhary by a majority of 2,93,471 votes.

Recently, the Election Commission (EC) banned Congress leader Randeep Surjewala from poll campaigning for his alleged sexist remark against the BJP MP.
