Maruti Suzuki has introduced the Jimny as a versatile off-roader, stepping into the realm of adventure alongside competitors like the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha. In the Indian automotive landscape, the demand for a vehicle that excels in various roles, from daily commuting to weekend getaways, has been a consistent trend. Maruti Suzuki, renowned for its practical and multifunctional vehicle offerings, decided to revive the spirit of the Gypsy by introducing the modern and sophisticated Jimny.

The Jimny, launched in May 2023, represents a contemporary version of the Gypsy, maintaining the rugged off-roading ethos while incorporating a touch of refinement. One strategic move by Maruti Suzuki was the introduction of a five-door version of this compact off-roader, ensuring that it remains practical for families while retaining its off-road capabilities.

Recently, the Jimny underwent an off-road test on a challenging track, allowing enthusiasts to experience its prowess. The Jimny showcased its off-roading competence across various terrains, including articulation tests, rock crawling, and mud plugging. Several attributes contribute to the Jimny”s superior off-roading performance.

At the heart of the Jimny”s capabilities is the Maruti AllGrip Pro, a robust 4×4 drivetrain featuring a traditional mechanical low-range transfer case. The vehicle employs a braking limited slip differential (LSD) that multiplies torque and directs it to the wheels with traction when others lack it, facilitating the Jimny”s ability to navigate challenging conditions.

Unlike many contemporary off-roaders loaded with electronic aids, the Jimny relies on its basic construction for off-roading prowess. Built on an old-school ladder frame chassis, the Jimny features a 3-link rigid axle suspension with coil springs at both the front and rear. The vehicle”s short wheelbase of 2,590 mm contributes to impressive approach, departure, and ramp-over angles of 36 degrees, 46 degrees, and 24 degrees, respectively.

The Jimny”s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing 104 bhp and 134 Nm of torque, proves more than capable for overcoming off-road obstacles. Notably, these off-roading tasks were performed on stock road-biased tires, emphasising the Jimny”s inherent capabilities.

While the Maruti Suzuki Jimny may lack the imposing road presence of traditional boxy off-roaders or the tech-laden electronic features of modern vehicles, its design and construction ensure it excels in challenging off-road trails. For those venturing into demanding off-road experiences, the Jimny provides a confident and capable companion, making even treacherous trails feel like a cakewalk.
