In a shift towards sustainability, HiLITE Group is aiming a national first – transforming its Calicut and Thrissur malls into India’s first 100% solar-powered shopping centres. Leading this clean energy transition is Eallisto Energies, which will spearhead the engineering, procurement, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance of the project.

The shift to full solar power is part of a collaborative effort involving INKEL Limited, a public-private partnership company under the state government, as a strategic partner, and Eallisto Energies as the technical force driving the solar transition. With a combined solar capacity of 11 megawatts (MW), the two malls wil operate entirely on renewable energy through a Group Captive model.

HiLITE Mall Calicut will be powered by an 8 MW ground-mounted solar plant and a 1 MW rooftop installation, while HiLITE Thrissur will run on a 3 MW ground-mounted facility. Together, these installations would generate more than 48,000 units of solar power daily, covering the energy needs of lighting, elevators, HVAC systems, food courts, and parking infrastructure.

The environmental impact of this development is significant. The switch to solar avoids an estimated 31,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year — the equivalent of planting 1.45 million trees or removing over 6,600 petrol-fuelled vehicles from the road annually.

In the presence of Kerala Industries Minister P Rajeeve, a term-sheet signing for the solar project was held in Kochi.

HiLITE Mall Calicut, a sprawling 12.7 lakh square foot retail space, houses over 270 brands and directly employs more than 3,000 people, with many more indirectly supported. With three (Calicut, Perinthanlmanna and Thrissur) operational malls and six (Chemmad, Nilambur, Mannarkad, Kochi and Kunnamkulam) more under development, all within Kerala, HiLITE Group’s commitment to green infrastructure marks a broader trend in environmentally conscious retail development.

Commenting on their role, Eallisto Energies stated that they are honoured to have led the technical backbone of this clean energy initiative. “This is more than a sustainability milestone — it’s a national benchmark. At Eallisto Energies, we’re honored to lead the engineering and execution behind this clean energy shift,” Eallisto said in a statement.

As energy demands rise and climate goals tighten, HiLITE Group’s solar leap — driven by Eallisto Energies’ engineering expertise — signals a promising model for others to emulate in building greener commercial spaces.
