The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme which was announced in the 2024-25 Budget has now opened its portal for company registrations on October 3 Thursday. This government scheme carries a goal to contribute to India’s vision of  Viksit Bharat by 2047 giving internships to one crore youth in the top 500 companies in India including Mahindra & Mahindra, Alembic Pharma, and Max Life Insurance over five years.

The candidates, aged 21-24 and not employed full-time or studying full-time can register on the portal from October 12. The scheme offers a stipend of Rs 4,500 per month from the government which will be transferred directly to the candidate’s bank account along with an additional Rs 500 from the company’s CSR funds. Those who have passed high school, or higher secondary school, have a certificate from an ITI, hold a diploma from a polytechnic institute, or are graduates with degrees such as B.A., B. Sc., B. Com, BCA, BBA, B. Pharma are eligible to apply for the internship.

A total of 111 companies have registered listing 1,077 internship positions in sectors like auto, pharma, and agriculture, across Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Telangana, and Gujarat. The selection process will utilise artificial intelligence to match candidates with company criteria for the PM Internship Scheme. Additionally, the Government will provide insurance under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.

The registration and selection process is as follows:

  • Eligible candidates register on the portal from October 12 the companies share shortlisted entries from October 27 to November 7.
  • Candidates accept offers from November 8 to November 15 and the internship commences on December 2, 2024.

As per the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) website, the pilot phase targets 1.25 lakh candidates with a government expenditure of Rs 800 crore. The scheme will be expanded to include more candidates after receiving Cabinet approval and a multilingual tele helpline (1800-116-090) has been set up to assist stakeholders. However, queries have already started pouring in from candidates on the toll-free number for the scheme . It was said that upon completion selected interns will receive certification which help them to further apply for regular jobs. Candidates can log in to (pminternship.mca.gov.in).
