The central government’s ambitious youth-oriented PM Internship Scheme (PMIS) has been delayed as per the Financial Express (FE) reports. However, no reason was given for the delay in launching the scheme on the due date. Reportedly, the decision has little to do with the companies and job seekers.
The 12-month internship scheme for the first batch was supposedly launching on December 12. However, now the new launch date will be announced. The registration window was closed on November 15, which was extended from its earlier November 10, 2024.
The PM Internship scheme received a good response, FE writes quoting the Ministry of Corporate Affairs source. According to the latest data under the PMIS over 650,000 applications were received for 1,25,000 opportunities, offered by 280 companies participating in the scheme.
Under the pilot phase of the PMIS 1,25000 internships will be provided under 24 sectors including oil & gas, energy, travel, automotive, banking and financial services, etc. The scheme aims to train 10 million people over a five-year duration.
The selected interns will be trained in different skills and will receive a stipend of Rs 5,000 per month. Out of the total stipend amount Rs 4,500 will be provided by the government and the rest amount will be provided by the companies under CSR.
The PMIS was launched under the 2024-25 Union Budget and start accepting applications on October 3. The scheme targets 500 companies in India to support the skilling of the participants.
The listed companies are not to participate mandatorily in the scheme. If a company can not directly provide internship opportunities can collaborate with companies in its forward and backward supply chain to support internship commitment.
Whether the selection process has been concluded or not is not clear yet. The reason for postponing the scheme launch is not given.
