Kerala: What Is 'Read E-books & Earn Money' App Scam? How Hundreds Of Malayalis Lost Over Rs 1 Crore
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Hundreds of people have lost around Rs 1.35 crore collectively in Kerala after falling prey to a new scam. At least 106 people recently submitted a mass petition to the Thiruvananthapuram Rural cyber police station, alleging that they together lost Rs 1.25 crore to the online scam.
The people get into the trap by an easy money trick used by the accused fraudsters. The scammers allegedly offered money for simply reading e-books. The victims were lured them with small initial payouts before cutting off access to their earnings through a task-based online scam.
According to cyber cell officials said similar scams were taking place in different parts of the state, particularly in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, the Vithura police. The officials suspect a UK-based link to the fraud.
