Kamrup Metropolitan district has declared a four-day holiday for all schools due to the ongoing heatwave. An official order from the Office of the Kamrup Metropolitan District Elementary Education Officer confirmed that the closure would be effective from 24 to 27 September 2024. Guwahati, the largest city in Assam is the headquarters of Kamrup Metropolitan district.

The decision was made following multiple reports of students suffering from heat-related health issues. “Based on the reports received from Head of the Institutions of different schools under Kamrup Metro regarding various incidents of ill-health and fainting of students due to excessive heat and dehydration, and with due approval from the District Commissioner, Kamrup Metro, it has been decided that all government, provincialised, and private schools functioning under Kamrup Metro district are to remain closed,” the order stated.

The authorities highlighted the need to prioritise student safety during this period of rising temperatures. “This decision has been taken in order to safeguard the students from the ill-effects of exposure to excessive heat and thereby, ensuring the health and well-being of the students. This order comes with immediate effect,” it added.
