The Tamil Nadu government had declared a holiday on October 16 due to the extreme rainfall. In a notification, the government said an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal has formed a low-pressure area off south coastal Andhra Pradesh and lay over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Tamil Nadu coast, citing an Indian Meteorological Department report.

Several cities in Karnataka, including Bengaluru, have also been experiencing rain-related havoc. The Bengaluru Urban District Collector also declared holiday for Anganwadi, primary, and high schools tomorrow on October 16, noting the heavy rainfall warning from the weather agency. Notably, another order today said the schools and colleges will remain shut tomorrow, October 17, adding that the government offices will continue to function as usual.
Union Territory Puducherry had also ordered the closure of the government schools, government-aided schools, private schools, and all colleges on October 16 due to heavy rain.
Schools in several parts of Andhra Pradesh including Nellow, Tirupati, Chittoor and Prakasham will also remain closed until October 17. The state ordered the closure after the IMD issued alert for heavy rainfall.

Notably, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in the southern states, including cities such as Chennai and Bengaluru. The downpour may continue for the next 2-3 days between October 14 and 17. The unceasing heavy rain has disputed traffic and public life in cities like Bengaluru, causing waterlogging.
