Amid Cyclone Fengal, Tamil Nadu's Health Teams Safely Deliver 1,526 Babies

Tamil Nadu: As Cyclone Fengal made landfall near Puducherry, Tamil Nadu has been witnessing heavy rainfall and strong winds. Authorities issued warnings for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the state’s coastal areas, districts in Andhra Pradesh such as Nellore, Chittoor, and Tirupati.

Amidst the challenging times, IAS officer Supriya Sahu shared that the doctors, nurses, and health staff in the state stood on the frontlines and delivered over 1,526 babies safely, ensuring proper care for both the mothers and their newborns on November 30, tche day when Cyclone Fengal made landfall.

The IAS officer shared that the team made sure that women who had their expected date of delivery around this time reached hospitals on time.

Displaying the efficient health planning by the medical staff in the state, Sahu wrote, “Teams made Birth planning Plan for every mother with details of their health parameters. It shows good health planning not only helps but delivers. A salute to their commitment, and service. Well done Team.”

Several parts of Puducherry and parts of Tamil Nadu reported floods. Puducherry received the highest rainfall in the last 30 years.

All private and government schools and colleges were closed today following the heavy downpour. Operations at the Chennai airport resumed after being suspended on Saturday. Three trains were cancelled due to the impact of the cyclone.

According to the IMD, Cyclone Fengal weakened into a deep depression and remained stationary over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for the past 12 hours. It is likely to move towards the west and gradually weaken into a depression north of Tamil Nadu in the next 12 hours.

The Indian Army deployed its soldiers and boats to evacuate stranded people in Puducherry and parts of Tamil Nadu. About 600 people were rescued from different locations in Puducherry. Teams of the NDRF and SDRF, and local authorities rescued people by using inflatable boats as roads remained flooded. Nearly 1,000 people were accommodated in 32 camps.

The effects of Cyclone Fengal were witnessed across other states, including parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, and Karnataka. The IMD has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala’s Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kasaragod and Kannur on December 2.
