Supriya Sahu, the newly-appointed Health Secretary of Tamil Nadu, lauded the free ambulance service in the State. She remarked the ambulance service is a boon to people who seek emergency medical care.

Taking to social media platform X, Supriya Sahu wrote: “How a credible and effective Public Health System can save precious lives ! I saw that in action during my visit to the Control Room of the 108 Free Ambulance service being operated by the Govt of Tamil Nadu.”

She says that a total number of 1353 Ambulances offering service round the clock has benefitted 42.8 lakhs pregnant women, 31.2 lakhs Trauma patients and about 10 lakhs Cardiac cases since 2008. These ambulances are enabled with GPS, and work on an algorithm based dynamic allocation system. Of the total ambulances, 303 are equipped with the Advanced life support and 65 are fitted with advanced neo natal life support. The average response time of the ambulance to reach the call site is fixed about 13 minutes.

“2989 Ambulance pilots, 2906 Emergency medical technicians ( 50% women), 196 Emergency response officers at call centre & 100 Admin staff operate this incredible service. Operated in partnership with GVK EMRI the Ambulance service is a boon to lakhs of people who need emergency medical care,” she adds.

The 108 Emergency Ambulance Service programme was launched by Tamil Nadu on September 15, 2008.

In recent reshuffle of senior IAS officers in the State, the Tamil Nadu government appointed Supriya Sahu as the Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Department. Gagandeep Singh Bedi who held the post earlier, is transferred to the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Development. Sahu was handling the Environment Climate Change and Forests Department earlier.
