Torrential Rains Claim Four Lives In Karnataka: Red Alert Issued For Multiple Districts

Karnataka: Widespread torrential rains continued to batter several regions of Karnataka on Thursday, June 12, claiming at least four lives, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red warning for multiple districts on Friday.

The coastal, Malnad, and interior regions of the state have been severely impacted, with reports of flooding, waterlogging, infrastructure damage, and traffic disruptions pouring in from various districts.

The IMD has issued a red warning for intense rainfall and thunderstorms in Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Shivamogga districts for Friday, June 13.

In the Dharwad district, two rain-related deaths were reported within 24 hours. In Kundgol taluk’s Hanchinal village, 31-year-old Shivayya Basayya Vatnalmath died after the tractor he was travelling in overturned in a stream. Two others were injured in the same incident on Wednesday, June 11.

In a separate incident in Hubballi, 58-year-old Hussainsab Kalasa went missing after an overflowing drain in Nekar Nagar swept away his two-wheeler. While bystanders rescued the pillion rider, Kalasa remains untraced as search operations continue, as per the reports.

Neighbouring Belagavi district also reported two fatalities on June 12 due to rain-related incidents. Authorities are yet to release further details about these cases.

The Malnad region, including Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan districts, experienced severe downpours, leading to widespread disruption. Several trees were uprooted, low-lying areas were submerged, and vehicular movement came to a standstill. Shivamogga district alone recorded an average rainfall of 40.9 mm, almost three times its normal, according to IMD.

Coastal districts bore the brunt of the rainfall as well. Udupi and Kodagu district administrations declared a holiday for all schools up to high school level on June 13 in view of the IMD’s red warning. However, pre-university colleges and higher educational institutions will remain open, confirmed Udupi Deputy Commissioner K. Vidyakumari.

In north Karnataka, Belagavi and Bagalkot districts reported severe waterlogging and property damage. In Raibag, several low-lying homes were inundated, with major roads rendered impassable.

In Bagalkot’s Guledgudda town, the Malaprabha river overflowed, submerging the Guledgudda–Parvati bridge and flooding homes, a hotel, and a petrol pump. Emergency crews and residents were seen working together to drain water from affected areas.

Reservoirs across the northern part of the state are receiving steady inflows. The Lal Bahadur Shastri Reservoir at Almatti saw an inflow of 12,641 cusecs, with the storage now at 61.6 tmcft. The Hipparagi barrage reported 11,608 cusecs inflow, while the Raja Lakhamagouda Reservoir at Hidkal is nearing full capacity at 48.98 tmcft out of 51 tmcft, as per IMD.

Authorities have urged residents in affected districts to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety advisories issued by the local administration.
