The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today, October 15, announced the withdrawal of southwest monsoons from the entire country. The weather forecasting agency has also declared the onset of Northeast Monsoon rainfall activity over southeast peninsular of India.
“Southwest monsoon has withdrawn from the entire country today. Simultaneously, the Northeast Monsoon rainfall activity has commenced over the south-east peninsula of India today, the 15th of October,” the IMD said in an X post.
Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala has seen heavy to moderate flash downpours in the past couple of days, forcing closure of educational institutions. The IMD had recently issued alerts in several districts of the southern states.

The weather agency further stated other characteristics, including a well-marked low-pressure area lying over the central part of the south Bay of Bengal while predicting easterly and northeasterly winds set in over southern peninsular India, the south and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, and extending up to middle tropospheric levels. It also said fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall occurred over the southeast peninsula, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall observed over Tamil Nadu & Puducherry, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Kerala.

The southwest monsoon usually begins over Kerala by June 1 and covers the entire country by the first week of July. It starts withdrawing from northwest India in the middle of September, withdrawing entirely by October 15.

On September 24, the weather agency said the south-west monsoon has embarked on its return journey, beginning from western Rajasthan.
