Bengaluru, Karnataka: Following torrential rains on Monday, Bengaluru wakes up to another fresh spell and thunderstorm on Tuesday, May 20. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Karnataka.

According to the weather body’s forecast, the city is expected to receive rainfall till May 23. It has also declared a yellow alert for Karnataka’s capital city till May 22. As per the reports, the incessant downpour caused three deaths and the flooding of more than 500 homes

The capital city came to a standstill due to impact of pre-monsoon rains which began on Sunday. The heavy rains resulted in waterlogging and flooding, submerging of underpasses and vehicles, suspension of BMTC bus services, turning roads into rivers, uprooting trees, power cuts, and frustrating kilometre-long traffic jams. Daily life in the capital city heavily affected due to the incessant rain.

To evaluate the rain-hit situation in Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar will conduct a city-wide inspection on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the situation has posed criticism from the opposition: political attacks on the state government for the collapsing infrastructure. Leader of Opposition R Ashoka launched attack on Shivakumar, who oversees the Bengaluru’s development, criticising him of being more interested in politics than governance.

The only difference now is we’re working to solve them — not with temporary fixes but with long-term, sustainable solutions,” he said.

According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the Bengaluru Urban observatory recorded 132 mm of rainfall, while Somasettihalli in Bengaluru North registered 119 mm, signalling one of the heaviest rainfalls in recent years.
