Extreme Rainfall Batters Kerala: 8 Districts On Red Alert, 3 Killed, Several Trapped Amid Landslides
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: As heavy rains continue to batter across Kerala, several regions have reported landslides and mudslides, killing at least three people so far. Chief Minister VD Satheesan has issued direction Revenue Minister, the Chief Secretary, and the District Collectors, stating that the government is fully prepared to tackle rain, landslide emergencies across state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for eight districts in Kerala, including Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, predicting extremely heavy rainfall is likely over the next 24 hours.

Experts have also warned of potential floods and landslides risk in vulnerable regions. Three people were killed and several others were trapped in separate landslides in Idukki and Kottayam districts on Saturday. Rescue teams including NDRF, Fire and Rescue, police and revenue officials were deployed for search and relief operations.
After debris hit her house in the early hours, a woman identified as Sumathi died in In Idukki’s Adoormala near Kudayathoor. Neighbours managed to rescue her husband and son, who were admitted to a Thodupuzha hospital with injuries. Their house was destroyed. Another youth, Joseph lost his life in Kottayam’s Payyanithottam, Poonjar, after being pulled from debris. Search in underway for his mother who is feared trapped.

In Vagamon, Idukki, a Vaikom native Prabhakaran Nair, died after a landslide struck his relative’s house where he was sleeping in a bedroom
