Kerala Rains: The Weather Department has warned of the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in the State on Thursday. A red alert has been issued in Kannur, Kasaragod, Pathanamthitta, and Idukki districts.

Holiday has been declared for educational institutions in all educational institutions in Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Kannur, Wayanad, Ernakulam, and Kasaragod including anganwadis, madrasas and tuition centres. However, there will be no changes in the preplanned examinations.

An orange alert, indicating heavy rainfall has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts.

Wayanad has shifted over 674 people, including 271 women from 188 families, to 17 relief camps due to persistent heavy rain, On Manorama reports.

As per the latest update from the weather body, Ernakulam is expected to have heavy rainfall with thunderstorms in the coming 3 hours.

Moozhiyar Dam in Pathanamthitta is on red alert following rise in water levels.

In Ernakulam, authorities have announced the closure of all tourist destinations under the District Tourism Promotion Council and the Tourism Department until further notice.

Similarly, Thiruvananthapuram District administration has also temporarily halted the travel to hilly tourist destinations like Ponmudy. Water levels in two rivers – Karamana and Vamanapuram – are also rising, posing concerns.

Residents in the coastal region and hilly regions were advised to exercise caution. Fishing has been banned along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts till June 1 as a precautionary measure.

District Collectors have also imposed night travel bans in several regions, especially hilly areas, as well as all tourism activities and quarry operations.
