Kerala Rains: Red Alert in Kozhikode, Wayanad Today

Kerala: Heavy rainfall continue to affect Kerala for the next four days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed. Similarly, strong westerly winds are also going to present in the State for the next coming days.

Red Alert, indicating extremely heavy rainfall, have been issued for Kozhikode and Wayanad districts on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Orange Alert, indicating heavy rain, has been declared for Thrissur, Malappuram, Kasaragod, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Palakkad.

Educational institutions in Wayanad, Kozhikode and Idukki will remain closed on Wednesday including anganwadis, madrasas and tuition centres.

As part of a special advisory, the IMD, State Emergency Operations Centre (KSEOC), and Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) have warned of rough sea conditions along the Kerala coast, On Manorama reports.

Due to the rough weather conditions, fishermen have been warned not to enter into the sea along the Kerala–Karnataka–Lakshadweep coasts from May 27 to May 31.

As the rain is getting intensified and the containers from the capsized Liberian ship washed ashore in Thiruvananthapuram, the district administration has opened a 24-hour emergency control room at the Medical office.

Water levels in Alappuzha’s Kuttanadu is also raising dangerously high, local media reports. Due to monsoon-related disruptions, 11 houses in the district were completely destroyed.

In Wayanad, 18 relief camps were opened and 693 residents were relocated to these facilities.

As the water levels are rising, an orange alert has been announced in Meenachil river in Kottayam, and Achankovil river in Pathanamthitta.
