Kerala: Relentless rain continues to lash across Kerala. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, indicating extremely heavy rainfall, for five districts – Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod – for Monday.
With the strong presence of the southwest monsoon, intense rainfall is expected to continue until June 19.

As a precautionary measure, district collectors declared a holiday for all educational institutions in 11 districts on Monday including anganwadis, madrasas, tuition centres, and professional colleges. It applies to institutions in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts. In Alappuzha district, a holiday has been declared for all the educational institutions in the Kuttanad and Ambalappuzha taluks. However, previously announced examinations will go as per the schedule.
Meanwhile, an orange alert, indicating heavy rainfall, is in place for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Idukki districts and a Yellow Alert, indicating moderate rainfall, has been in place for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha.

According to IMD, the heavy rainfall is due to cyclonic circulations over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and South Madhya Maharashtra, along with strong Westerly winds over Kerala and the Lakshadweep area at lower tropospheric levels.
