Tragedy In Pune: 2 Killed As Bridge Over Indrayani River Collapses; Several Missing

Pune, Maharashtra: Officials have confirmed several fatalities after a bridge over the Indrayani river collapsed in Maval, Pune on Sunday, June 15. A total of 38 people have been rescued so far from the Kundmala bridge on which the tragedy took place. At least two deaths have been confirmed while several reported to have swept away as the rescue operation to take out the missing tourists continues, news agency IANS reported, citing National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Kundmala is a popular tourist destination that sees high footfall during monsoons. Travelers will flock to the spot during the season, and there were reportedly large number of tourists at the time of bridge collapse. The people fell into the swollen river when the bridge collapsed, and many were reportedly swept away.

NDRF, police and other rescue workers have rushed to the spot, saving several people trapped under the bridge. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed that 32 people have sustained injuries, of whom six are critical. In a social media post, the chief minister pointed out that some people have been swept away, and a  search is being carried out “on a war footing.”

 

According to preliminary information, 2 people have lost their lives in this incident. I offer my heartfelt tributes to them. We share in the grief of their families. Regarding this incident, I am in constant contact with the Divisional Commissioner, District Collector, Superintendent of Police, and the concerned Tehsildar,” the chief minister said. He further noted that those who have been rescued have been to the hospital for treatment, adding that the Divisional Commissioner himself has left for the incident site.

“NDRF has been deployed at the spot. The relief work has been immediately accelerated,” Fadnavis wrote in a post in Marathi.

The bridge that collapsed is located in Pune rural’s Maval area, and heavy to very heavy rains expected in the ghat regions. The area had received intense downpour in the last few days.
