Mumbai, Maharashtra: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to introduce an Artificial Intelligence (AI) camera to prevent people from dumping garbage in public spaces.

The AI-equipped smart camera can detect littering and issue an immediate audio warning to offenders, according to the BMC.

In a social medial media post, the civic body shared a video of the initiative, and said that its G/North ward had introduced the technology at Gajanan Vatika on Dr Raykar Marg in Mahim, one of the city’s garbage-vulnerable points (GVPs).

The video shared by the BMC shows a man walking along a roadside lined with parked vehicles, trees and buildings. He then bent down and placed a green plastic bag on the ground before walking away. It then shows green boxes tracked the man’s movements in real time, demonstrating how the AI-powered system detected his activity.

The AI camera identifies people approaching the location with the apparent intention of dumping waste and immediately issued an appeal through a loudspeaker, asking them to keep the area clean and avoid littering. The post further said that it is planning to install similar AI-enabled cameras at several other locations across Mumbai.
