The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday predicted a low pressure over the Bay of Bengal will likely intensify into a cyclonic storm called Cyclone Dana by October 23, affecting the coasts of Odisha-West Bengal.

The weather system will likely move west-northwest, intensifying into a depression by October 22 morning, and then evolve into a cyclonic storm by October 23 over the east-central area of the Bay of Bengal.

By the morning of October 24, Cyclone Dana is expected to reach the northwest Bay of Bengal off the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal. The weather department has predicted heavy rainfall in the coastal regions from October 23 to 25.

The name Dana has been proposed by Qatar. Cyclone Dana will be the second cyclone to develop in the North Indian Ocean basin within two months. In late August, Cyclone Asna had formed in the Arabian Sea. Notably, the basin, comprising the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, is prone to cyclogenesis during the months of October and December.

Fishermen are advised to return to shore by October 21 for safety. The sea conditions are likely to be rough for the coming days.

Odisha is predicted to witness very heavy rainfall on October 23 and extremely heavy rain on October 24 and 25. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Monday and Tuesday. West Bengal is also expected to receive heavy downpours on October 24-25, the Met department warned.

A yellow alert has been issued for parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions and keep themselves updated with the weather conditions to ensure safety measures during the severe storm.
