West Bengal Schools To Remain Closed From Oct 23 To 25 Due To Cyclone 'Dana'

The West Bengal schools and colleges in nine districts will remain closed from October 23 to 25, 2024 as a precautionary measure from Cyclone ‘Dana’. The schools at East Midnapore, West Midnapore, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Jhargram, Bankura, Hooghly, Howrah and Kolkata will remain closed. The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) centres will remain closed also.

Cyclone Dana is expected to bring heavy rainfall to both states in the next few days.

To ensure the student’s and school staff’s safety, the government has decided to close the educational institutions as a precautionary measure. Students, parents, and guardians were advised to stay in regular contact with school authorities for updates on holidays, online classes, and other relevant details.

Odisha, West Bengal, coast guard, NDRF and other rescue forces are on alert. The deep depression is likely to become a severe cyclonic storm and cross the Odisha-West Bengal coasts with a speed of 100-110 kmph, according to IMD.

The government authorities and rescue forces have begun the evacuation of people from the area prone to be affected by the cyclone. In Odisha, multipurpose cyclone shelthers, flood shelthers and other buildings have been identified to relocate nearly 10 lakh people and temporary relief camps have also been prepared.

Moreover, Army, Navy and Coast Guard along with ships and aircrafts and officials have been kept in readiness as Cyclone Dana is set to make landfall in Odisha-West Bengal coast.
