'St Stephen's Set To Enter Next Era Of AI': Professor Susan Elias, First Female Principal In Its 145-Years History

St Stephen’s College has announced the appointment of its first woman principal in 145 years of history. Professor Susan Elias will serve as the 14th principal of the college, succeeding John Varghese. She has obtained a double PhD from IIT Madras and Anna University.

In her first comment after the appointment, to PTI, Prof Elias said to make the institute AI-ready and commit to protecting the legacy of the institute. “Will work on AI certificate courses for students, alumni”, the New Principal told to PTI. “St Stephen’s College is ready to enter the next era with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI)”, prof Susan Elias said.

Prof Elias has served as a pro vice chancellor at Chandigarh University and has worked as a professor of electronics engineering at VIT Chennai, among other academic roles, according to her LinkedIn profile.

The milestone is achieved after five decades of introducing co-education in 1975 into the college and 20 years after it elected its first woman student’s union president in 2005.

Founded in Chandni Chowk by the Cambridge Mission to Delhi, the college became part of the Delhi University in 1922 before moving to its iconic red-brick campus in the University Enclave. But for nearly a century after its foundation, the institute remained reserved for males only. Even after opening for women in 1975, the gender ratio remained very low.
