UPSC To Use ChatGPT-style AI To Speed Up Evaluation Of Mains Copies

In the race of Artificial Intelligence, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) does not seem to fall behind, as the commission is reportedly gearing up for a tech leap by integrating a Chat-GPT-style AI into the evaluation of examination copies and the administrative work.

For the evaluation of preliminary exam copies, the UPSC has already adopted the computer-based evaluation process; however, for the written exam, the commission still relies on the manual checking of copies, which causes delay and anxiety among aspirants. The manual copy checking also causes differences in marks, as this includes a level of subjectivity by the evaluator.

The newly adopted AI tool will help in giving instant and constructive feedback to the answers, but unlike machines, human examiners will still make the final call on the answers. The process will not be mechanised completely, but a hybrid mode will be adopted to ensure fairness, empathy, and accountability.

For administrative purposes, the AI tool will also be used to analyze years of service records for promotions, punishments, and case summaries, to streamline the tedious administrative work.

The initiative is part of a larger reform drive by the commission. Recently, UPSC launched a face-authentication app with NeGD to curb impersonation during the exams – to be piloted at the NDA/NA exam on Sept 14.

Notably, the UPSC main examination 2025 was held from August 22 to August 31, and candidates are eagerly waiting for their results to come. Usually the main result is released after 2-3 months of the exams, however, this year the result can be expected to come earlier if the AI tool is used to evaluate the copies.

However, a transparency and efficiency related issue could arise in implementing the AI tool.
