Prof Susan Elias: Delhi's Prestigious St Stephen's College Gets First Woman Principal
New Delhi: Prof Susan Elias, Computer scientist and educator, has been appointed as Delhi’s Prestigious St Stephen’s College’s 14th principal on Tuesday, May 12. The appointment has made Susan Elias the first woman to head the institution in its more than 145-year history.
The appointment will be effective from June 1, 2026, according to an official notice issued by the college. The professor will take charge as the XIV Principal of the College and as its first lady Principal with effect from the 1st of June 2026, the official notification said. Founded in 1881, St Stephen’s College is among Delhi University’s oldest constituent colleges.
Susan succeeds Professor John Varghese, who had continued in office despite completing his tenure, triggering outrage between the college and varsity. Susan comes with nearly three decades of experience in engineering education and interdisciplinary research. She built her entire academic career in Chennai before moving into national-level university administration roles.
According her Linkdin profile, Susan has been working as pro vice chancellor (research) at Chandigarh University Uttar Pradesh from January to May 2026. Before than, she worked as director (research) at Hindustan University between October 2024 and December 2025
