This year, tension arose when the college denied admission to 12 single-girl child students who applied under DU’s supernumerary quota system introduced last year. St Stephen’s College argued that the university requested to admit students beyond their admission capacity for the session.

St Stephen’s College also argued in the Delhi High Court that admitting a student under the ‘single girl child’ quota infringes on the principle of equality before the law. The college counsel said that the girl child quota is against the Article 14, 15(3), 15(5) and 30 of the constitution, claiming that the allocation of seats under the quota violates these four articles.

The High Court inquired whether the college raised the objection in the past also.
