Mumbai, Maharashtra: Ahead of a new domestic season, the veteran cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has quit Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy captaincy to “groom a new leader.” He made the announcement through a social media post.
“Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it’s the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I’ve decided not to continue in the captaincy role,” Rahane said in an X post.

“I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player and will continue my journey with Mumbai Cricket Association to help us win more trophies. Looking forward to the season,” he said in conclusion.
Under Rahane’s leadership, Mumbai team attained remarkable success in domestic cricket. In the last season, Mumbai won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Rahane emerged the tournament’s highest run-scorer. Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy run ended in the semi-finals after a 90-run defeat to Vidarbha.

Rahane last played competitive cricket in the IPL 2025 season, contributing 390 runs from 13 matches for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
