“The past 17 years of playing cricket for Sri Lanka has been my highest honor and pride. Nothing can match that feeling of patriotism and servitude when one dons the National Jersey. “I have given my everything to cricket and cricket has given me everything in return and made me the person that I am today,” the all-rounder said.

Mathews expressed his gratitude to Sri Lanka cricket fans for appreciating him throughout his career – both at the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

“Whilst I bid adieu to the test format, as discussed with selectors, I will remain available for selection of the white ball formats, if and when my country needs me. I believe this test team is a talented side with many future and present greats playing the game,” the player stated.

Mathews achieved a 8,000 runs in Test cricket, making him the third Sri Lankan batter to reach that mark, joining Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. He reached the milestone during the second Test match against South Africa at Gqeberha, joining the exclusive club of only three Sri Lankan players.
