Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah is set to retire from the T20s after the ongoing three-match series against India.
“I think this is the right time for me,” Mahmudullah said during a press conference in Delhi on Tuesday. “The captain and coach already knew. I believe we should start preparing for the next World Cup.”
After making his debut against Kenya in Nairobi, in 2007, the veteran served his national team in 139 matches in his T20 career spanning 17 years. He accumulated 2395 runs at an average of 23.48 and scalped 40 wickets with the best bowling figures of 3/10.
However, his recent run, has seen a major slump in form as he registered the highest score of 25 (vs the Netherlands in the T20 World Cup 2024), in his last eight innings while scalping one wicket.
The Bangladesh management continued to show faith in him as their ‘finisher’ but he managed to score only one run during the first match against India in Gwalior.
The former Bangladesh captain is set to make his next appearance in the shortest format in the second T20I on Wednesday before playing his farewell match in Hyderabad on Saturday.
The 38-year-old will continue to serve his nation in the ODIs after announcing his retirement from the Tests in 2021. He was the leading run-scorer for Bangladesh in the 2023 World Cup.
